My Birth Plan vs. Public Hospital Policies: A Match Made in Miscommunication

Ah, the birth plan. For some, it’s a casual list of preferences. For me, it’s a meticulously crafted document more detailed than IKEA instructions.

Now, picture Denmark’s cozy, efficient healthcare versus Mexico’s reality check that left me stunned. In “Denmark vs. Mexico: Healthcare Shock,” we’ll see how my meticulously crafted birth plan measured up against the public hospital policies here. Spoiler: it’s like comparing a gourmet feast to instant noodles.

Crafting the Perfect Birth Plan: “The Birth Plan That’s More Prepared Than a Boy Scout”

ree

Creating my birth plan was no small feat. Armed with a template from The Bump (highly recommended information source) and a thirst for knowledge, I dove into a rabbit hole of research. Every checkbox became a mini research project, each question a quest for ultimate birth wisdom. I became the Sherlock Holmes of birth plans, uncovering how many practices are based on outdated hospital policies rather than what’s best for baby or mom. My birth plan is now a meticulously detailed masterpiece, ready for any scenario—just like a Boy Scout, but with more pregnancy cravings and hormonal mood swings.

Denmark vs. Mexico: Healthcare Shock

With my birth plan in hand, I naively assumed healthcare in Mexico would match Denmark’s flawless standards. Cue the dramatic music as my expectations took a nosedive into a much messier reality.

Denmark: The Land of Hygge and Healthcare

In Denmark, healthcare is the epitome of coziness and efficiency. Healthcare is not just free but also top-tier, making every hospital visit feel like a well-orchestrated spa experience. When it comes to giving birth, the system is so reliable that many women don’t even bother with a birth plan. They trust their doctors to be up-to-date with the latest research and genuinely invested in their well-being. Doulas and midwives are rarely needed because the healthcare system itself is so well-organized and supportive. It’s like having a personal team of friendly, highly-trained experts ensuring your birth experience is smooth and cozy. Danish doctors respect your choices and make sure you feel like their number-one priority.

My Birth Plan vs. Mexican Hospitals: A Real Comedy Show

ree

Now.... My meticulously crafted birth plan, designed with more research than a PhD thesis, meets the reality of a public hospital in Ensenada. It’s a clash worthy of a comedy show!

First up, in the public hospital, women are not allowed any support during labor. That’s right—no doula, no midwife, and not even the baby’s father can join in the delivery room. So, if you’re a dad wanting to be there for your partner or just someone who’s there for moral support, tough luck.

ree

Language barrier? No problem—because you won’t be allowed to have your phone for translations or to call for help. You’ll also need to leave your snacks and drinks at home, as eating and drinking are strictly forbidden. And, if you’re feeling a little claustrophobic about giving birth in a room with up to 13 other women, welcome to the club.

During labor, the policy is to keep you on your back, despite the fact that you're more likely to tear in that position. As soon as your baby arrives, don’t expect any skin-to-skin contact—your newborn will likely be whisked away with no clue as to what happens next.

ree

And let’s not forget the routine episiotomies, performed with the same enthusiasm as a carnival ride.

So, here’s to my birth plan—a comedy show that’s had me in stitches, figuratively speaking (for now). If I wanted to experience anything close to this level of unpredictability, I’d just take up stand-up comedy.

The Quest for a Safe Birth: Our Epic Adventure

So, with my birth plan laughed out of the public hospital, we embarked on an epic quest for a safe birth.

From DIY birth options to scouring nearby hospitals, we’ve faced a rollercoaster of hope and disappointment. Each promising lead brought new challenges, making our quest feel like a never-ending plot twist.

Exploring Options: From DIY Birth to Hospital Hunt

The first gynecologist I found spoke English but insisted on communicating with Sami in Spanish, leaving me clueless—especially fun during an early vaginal scan. Clearly, it was time to move on. The next gynecologist seemed perfect: state-of-the-art equipment, fluent English, and genuinely nice. But then, she ghosted me when I asked about affordable birthing options. Classic.

ree

We called every private hospital in Ensenada, but realizing that the private hospitals were about as affordable as buying a small island, we started exploring other options. Next, we looked into birthing clinics and midwives in Tijuana, but the long drive and the risk of a fast labor felt like playing Russian roulette with contractions. Renting an Airbnb in Tijuana seemed like a brilliant plan until we realized the costs and logistics were as complicated as a soap opera plot.

Next, I researched home births, much to Sami’s horror. While I found it could be a safe and controlled option, the bureaucratic nightmare of registering a home birth in Mexico made it as appealing as a root canal. Plus, the idea of rushing to the hospital last-minute and facing traumatic scenarios quickly ruled out the home birth option.

ree

We felt utterly lost—in need of a new gynecologist, viable birthing options, or the funds for anything more comfortable than a cardboard box. It was like trying to navigate a labyrinth blindfolded, with both hands tied behind our backs.

Counting Pennies and Prayers: Our Financial Reality and Why We Need You

In this chaotic search for a place to give birth, a surprising spark of hope emerged at a 4-year-old’s birthday party.

Finding Hope at a 4-Year-Old’s Birthday Party

ree

Just when our search for a safe birthing option felt like a tragic comedy, a 4-year-old’s birthday party became our unexpected beacon of hope.

Sami and I, frazzled and overwhelmed, were surrounded by laughter, cake and kids running around with stick fingers, when we met a couple who had recently navigated the labyrinth of birthing options.

To our astonishment, they introduced us to a new gynecologist at a private hospital that had previously slipped under our radar. The price was almost half of what we had been quoted elsewhere, making it a feasible option for us. Their glowing recommendation, was like a lifeline tossed into our stormy sea.

ree

Hearing their positive experience almost brought me to tears of relief. Suddenly, the birth plan that once seemed like a distant dream now felt within reach, rekindling hope I had nearly given up. The thought of having a safe, supportive place to welcome our baby was almost too good to be true. Finally in this journey, It felt like the universe was cutting us some slack.

But even with this promising lead, we still face the daunting task of gathering enough funds to make this dream a reality. We’ve been counting pennies, but the financial gap remains a significant hurdle.

Bridging the Gap: How Your Support Can Make a Difference

Now, we’re on a mission to gather enough funds for this hospital. While moving in with Sami’s family helps, it’s not quite enough to bridge the gap.

With our hopes reignited and a glimmer of possibility within reach, we find ourselves at a crossroads. The discovery of this promising birthing option was a beacon in the storm, but turning it into reality requires more than hope. Our financial resources are stretched thinner than a newborn's patience.

That’s where you come in.

Support Our Journey to a Safe and Loving Birth

Our journey to welcome our baby is filled with hope, but also with significant challenges. The public hospitals here have practices that are far from what we consider safe and comforting. From laboring alone to questionable care, the thought of navigating this alone is overwhelming.

Your support will help us secure a private hospital where we can ensure a caring and supportive environment for both me and our baby. Every contribution brings us closer to a safe and loving birth experience.

Your generosity will make a world of difference to our growing family and other families, as everything that exceeds our needs will be donated to other families in need.
